A well breed and trained pointer will become your most valuable hunting tool.

In Australia, a deer dog refers to a dog that helps you find deer, but has no part in catching them.
​
I have trained more than 400 dogs over the past decade including German Wire Haired pointers GWP's, German Short Haired pointers GSP's, Hungarian Vizsla's, English pointers and Weimeraners being used for sambar.
While all these dog breeds can be trained to indicate a deer, I have not seen any breed or bloodline capable of finding and pointing deer to such an elite level as my English pointers. click here for more information around choosing a dog breed.
To get the most out of working with your dog you will need to refine your style and learn how to utilise your dogs instincts.

Some deer dog training methods used overseas (e.g. Europe) are not useful for finding sambar deer as they are based more around using the dog after the shot or are too restrictive of a dogs range for Australian deer hunting conditions.
I want my dogs to find deer, so I need them to be able to range widely. Some training methods reduce a dogs range greatly to only meters, which reduces the amount of deer that can be found, the area a hunter can cover during a sambar deer hunt and the distance you will be from the deer which means scaring them off before getting a shot.

It's Daniel's hunting style that he is well known for, he loves to get close during a hunt because the closer you get the higher the adrenaline and excitement. Getting closer to animals increases the skill level required. That is where a deer dog comes in. They move ahead and point where deer are before the deer know where we are.
Daniel has hunted since the age of 5, began training his first hunting dog at 8 and has hunted most Australian game. He also takes hunters to Africa, New Zealand and North America.
